Hall, Stuart

Hall, Stuart
   b. 1932
A Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, Hall arrived in the UK from Jamaica in 1951 and has become arguably the leading cultural studies commentator in Britain. A radical sociologist in the 1960s and 1970s, he took over from Richard Hoggart as the head of the Birmingham CCCS, promoting a wide range of cultural and political analyses. He has been enormously influential in black studies in the UK, founded New Left Review, and helped introduce Continental philosophy in to Britain. His many seminal essays have attacked institutional white racism from Powell to Thatcher, and also helped to forge a black British aesthetic based on the idea of ‘new ethnicities’.
